There is much conversation about the new standards for retro reflectivity concerning traffic signage in the future. The Federal Highway Administration addresses many questions that we all have here.

To summarize:
There are 3 basic types of reflective sheeting:
Engineer Grade (Type I)
High Intensity (Type III, IV)
Diamond Grade

Type I Engineer Grade sign sheeting may still be used for white, green, and red backgrounds. It may still be used for the white legend on a sign with a red background. Thus, STOP signs and black-on-white regulatory signs may still be made from Type I Engineer Grade sign sheeting.

Type I Engineer Grade cannot be used for the white legends on ground-mounted guide signs (Street Signs) but the green or blue background
can be Type I Engineer Grade.

Type I Engineer Grade cannot be used for the yellow or orange backgrounds on warning and temporary traffic control signs.

Public agencies will have until January 2015 to replace any regulatory, warning, or ground mounted guide signs (excluding street signs)
and until January 2018 to replace street signs that fail to meet minimum retro reflectivity levels.
